By now you must know the importance or brushing and flossing your teeth regularly for optimal oral health. Both activities work to remove plaque from the teeth before it can cause dental disease. Despite your best efforts, you may still wonder how well you are actually doing to complete the task. If so, a plaque disclosing tablet can help you see exactly what you’re missing. What Are Plaque Disclosing Tablets?A plaque disclosing agent works to temporarily dye and plaque present in the mouth a distinctive color. While our dental hygienists may apply them, they are also available for home use. In addition to tablets, they can also be found in liquid or swab forms, and they are available in many different flavors. How Do You Use a Plaque Discoloring Tablet? These tablets are simple to use. Simply chew the tablet as directed, or if you are using a discoloring liquid, swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting. The agent reacts with any plaque left on the teeth and gums and will dye it a bright color. Next, examine your teeth with a mirror. You’ll see the spots that you’ve missed when brushing, and it will give you an idea of where to concentrate your dental hygiene efforts in the future. For example, if most of the plaque left behind is found along the gum line of your lower teeth, you’ll know to spend more time brushing this portion of your mouth in the future. Take this opportunity to floss and brush again to remove any remaining plaque that has been dyed by the disclosing tablet. However, you should note that the dye will wear off on its own eventually, so you don’t need to worry about permanent staining.
