You are moving along with your life, minding your own business, when all of the sudden, you bite down on a piece of food- and your mouth hurts. If you have never been in pain before, it can be a little disconcerting, especially when it is your mouth that’s hurting. Have questions why your teeth might be hurting when you bite down? We have some ideas on what could be causing your pain. Why Biting Down HurtsThere are three primary reasons why your teeth might hurt when you bite down. First, if you have a sharp pain in one area of your mouth when you bite down, you may have a problem with one tooth. The tooth could have a cavity. You could also have a loose filling. The tooth could also be cracked or broken. All of these problems would cause pain when you bite down, especially if your dentin (the softer part of the tooth) is exposed. The pain could also be greater if it is close to the nerves of your tooth. A second cause of tooth pain is not as sharp. You may have a dull ache on one side of your jaw. The pain could spread down your neck. You could also get headaches. This pain you’re feeling could be caused by clenching or grinding your teeth at night. Many people clench or grind their teeth at night without even realizing it. A third cause of pain may become more noticeable when you are eating or drinking very hot or very cold foods. You may have sensitive teeth, which is more noticeable when you eat or drink hot or cold things. If you are having any of these tooth problems, don’t worry. Many of these problems can be taken care of with a few simple steps. Why not give us a call today? We would be happy to make an appointment for you to discuss your tooth pain, and how we can help. |
