What Must be Done to Care for Dead Teeth?

Posted on 6/2/2019 by Dr. Jon Packman
If you think you have a dead tooth, you probably have lots of questions. What is a dead tooth, and how do I fix it? Can a dead tooth even be fixed? We have some answers for you, that will help you make sure you have all of the facts about your dead tooth and how dead teeth can be treated.

If a tooth is dead, it means that the tooth is no longer getting a good, continuous blood supply to the pulp, which is the center of the tooth. If the pulp isn’t getting blood, it will die, because the pulp has to have oxygen to survive.

Dead teeth can happen in many different ways. Cavities can eventually work their way into the pulp of the tooth, which causes the tooth to decay and die. If you suffer a trauma to your mouth, your tooth might also die due to injury.

Caring for a Dead Tooth

If you have a dead tooth, you may experience pain and discomfort. The pain might be mild, or it could be severe. You may also notice that the tooth is changing color. It could begin to look really yellow, then change from gray to black.

If you schedule an appointment quickly, there may be a chance that the tooth can be saved, especially if infection has not set in. You may be a candidate for a root canal, which would save the tooth. If the tooth can be repaired, it could get a crown, which will stabilize and protect it from further injury.

There are times when a dead tooth cannot be saved. When that happens, the tooth will be removed. However, there are ways that an artificial tooth can be placed in the space in your mouth. You could get a dental implant or a dental bridge. Dental implants preserve the look of your mouth and helps to keep your jaw healthy.
