There are lots of health experts out there who are touting the benefits of a vegan diet. People either choose to eat vegan because they do not believe animals should be killed for their food, or because they feel better if they eat vegan. However, if you are thinking about eating a vegan diet, there are some things you need to consider. One of the things you need to consider is whether or not a vegan diet will affect your dental health. While this sounds like a silly question, in reality, people who live a vegan lifestyle often have more dental issues that those who do not live that lifestyle. Not sure how a vegan diet might hurt your dental health? Keep reading. Dental Problems and VeganismThe problems with veganism is that vegans are trying to eliminate meat and dairy products as part of their diet. In order to substitute, they choose to add more grain and sugar products into their diet. This creates two problems. First, meat and dairy products contain vitamins and minerals not found in fruits or vegetables. Second, the addition of more sugar into the diet allows more bacteria to grow in the mouth, which can lead to acids dissolving tooth enamel. This allows more cavities to form. You will need to find ways to get the vitamins found in meat and dairy you have displaced from your diet. Examples of these vitamins include calcium, phosphorous, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and iron. The good news is, if you look around, there are vegan substitutes for many of the vitamins. For example, you can replace the calcium in your diet by eating tofu, leafy greens and edamame. Phosphorus can be replaced through soybeans and grains. With some careful planning, you will be able to make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need.
