Are There Dangers to Root Canals?

Posted on 9/15/2019 by Dr. Jon Packman
Are There Dangers to Root Canals?Root canals can seem quite scary and might make you feel a little uneasy, especially if you don't know much about how the procedure works. Many people believe that a root canal and other endodontic procedures lead to such things as pain and illness and should be avoided.

This isn't true. In fact, a root canal helps your tooth rather than hurt it and the longer you hold out the greater the risk you subject your tooth to. Here are some of the myths surrounding root canal treatment and their refutations:

The Treatment is Painful
This was true a few decades ago. However, with the advent of modern anesthetics and technology, the process isn't any more painful than getting your cavity filled. Much of the pain from a bad toothache comes from tissue that has been damaged deep in the tooth. That pain can be alleviated through root canal treatment, which allows us to remove the damaged tissue. Furthermore, we are experts in managing pain and treat most cases very quickly and in a way that leaves you, the patient, feeling comfortable.

The Treatment causes Illness
Some sites on the internet suggest that a root canal treatment increases your risk of contracting a disease in the future. Again, this isn't true. This false claim is based on badly designed research done nearly a hundred years ago that has long been debunked. Modern medicine has allowed us to learn a lot about where diseases come from and it certainly has nothing to do with root canal treatment.

Removing the Tooth is better

Well, to be sure, it's always best to try and save your natural tooth. The real thing will always be better than an artificial replacement, no matter how good the replacement. That's why root canal treatment makes so much more sense than removing the tooth. The success rate is also high enough that most root canal treated teeth will last you the rest of your life. It also requires less time and procedures than replacing an extracted tooth.

Root canal treatment is perfectly safe and we recommend that you opt for it before going for the alternative. If you have any questions, or would like to inquire about getting a root canal treatment, you can call us or pop into our offices at any time!
