Ways We Can Use Posts to Help Fix Teeth
Statesville, NC

Image of a post helping fix the lower row of teeth. When it comes to different skills that are available to save a tooth, a rarely known procedure is to apply a dental post. It is commonly mistaken for a dental implant and people imagine invasive surgery and drilling.

Our office has provided post and crown procedures for individuals who were recommended tooth extraction by other offices. Here is how we save someone's tooth using a post.

Difference between a Dental Post and an Implant

Dental posts sometimes get confused for dental implants. A dental implant is when the tooth is completely removed and a large screw is surgically attached to the jaw bone, once that has healed, the remaining teeth can be anchored to the screw, attached to the jaw. A dental post is when you don't have enough tooth remaining to build a crown on. Then the dental post, in essence, replaces your root, making it possible to place the crown on the post.

What are the Benefits of a Dental Post?

The best analogy our office has to explain the benefits of a dental post is if you were building a fence. A fence post is designed to keep something stable and locked down. In this analogy, the fence is your crown. The post replaces your root to stabilize the tooth and secure it when there is little tooth left to apply a crown. They are strong and will last a lifetime with care.

Before the invention of the dental post-procedure, people were left with one option which was to pull the tooth and get fitted for some dentures. Having a post applied is a relatively painless experience. The few days following the procedure you may feel a slight amount of aching as your mouth adjusts to the new root.

It will subside in a few days. If you are currently experiencing tooth decay and another dentist has recommended extraction. Give us a call today and we will get you scheduled for a second opinion.
