Why the Corners of the Mouth Often CrackHave you ever noticed the corners of your mouth cracking? You may feel is comfort because of this or you may not think much of it. You may break out the lip balm to try to help, but that does not always resolve the issue.

Instead of stabbing at the different solutions, it is better to learn why the corners of your mouth crack. This can help you not only treat it when it happens, but also prevent it from happening at all.

The Cause of Cracked Mouth Corners

Many assume that the cracked corners of their mouth are the result of chapped lips. This is not usually the case. Instead the cracked corners of the mouth are a condition called Angular Cheilitis. This is a condition that is the result of a fungus. This condition causes red swollen patches in the corner of the mouth. Some of the things you may notice are cracks in the corners, blisters, itchy and swollen lips.

Saliva can get trapped in the corners of the mouth. The fungus is in the saliva. When the saliva dries, the corners of the mouth will begin to crack. You may try licking your lips and the corners because they feel dry. When you do this, you are creating the conditions that allows the fungus to grow and eventually cause an infection.

Treatment of the Problem

There are several risk factors for this condition. People with diabetes, people with braces and people who wear ill-fitting dentures are at a higher risk. The treatment involves keeping the area dry and turning to medications to fight the infections. The medication will depend on whether it is a fungal infection or a bacterial infection.
