What to Expect During a Dental Exam

A dental exam aims to evaluate your dental health and hygiene, as well as your risk of contracting various dental health conditions. Dental exams also seek to demonstrate proper methods of taking care of your teeth, be they natural or implants. You can expect a couple of diagnostic procedures, depending on the assessment.

Physical Exams

A physical examination involves checking for any visible or physically identifiable signs of any dental problem. Our dentist will look into your mouth with the help of mirrors. He/she will also feel the area under your jaw, your cheeks and lips, and the sides of your neck with his/her hands.

Physical exams usually inspect your dental hygiene and check for any visible signs of tooth or gum infections. It checks for any signs of oral cancer. Physical exams are often the first diagnostic procedure you’ll go through.

X-Rays

X-rays images allow in-depth and more detailed examination of your dental structures. There are different types of X-ray images that can be taken depending on which part of your mouth is being investigated.

A panoramic x-ray produces an image of your entire mouth. It is used for a general examination of the structures in your mouth. A bitewing X-ray is used to capture the images of the crowns of your upper and lower teeth. You will be asked to bite into an X-ray film as the x-ray is taken. A Periapical x-ray concentrates on a single tooth and the bone surrounding it.

Dental Impressions

Dental impressions are used to examine the physical structure of your teeth. Normally, our dentist will ask you to bite into a soft material, so that they can get a dental impression of your teeth. These impressions are normally used to examine cases of tooth deformity and misplacement.

The impressions are also used when molding dental implants. They are used to ensure the resultant implants are of the right size and shape.
